Beth, a homeless woman, gathers boxes to sleep on from in front of the Chanel luxury-goods store on 57th Street near Fifth Avenue November 16, 2004 in New York City. Between stints at cheap apartments or in Boston, Beth sleeps on Fifth Avenue, just off of Central Park. Jovial, lucid, and without a drug or alcohol problem, Beth is a popular figure among wealthy New Yorkers who live near Central Park. They sometimes give her old clothes or money as they pass her on daily walks through the park. She is a working-class woman from Massachusetts, has drifted in and out of homelessness for the past few years, battered by financial problems and an indifferent family. Homelessness is an ongoing problem in New York, and some of the city's most destitute choose to sleep out of doors on well-lit and busy Fifth Avenue, one of the world's most exclusive shopping districts and home to the wealthy of New York.
